Delete your account

Last updated 10 September 2026

This page explains how to delete your Bilup Tenant account (app co.bilup.tenant), what is removed when you do, and what stays on the record the office keeps for your house.

In the app

Open Bilup Tenant, go to your profile, scroll to the bottom and tap Close my account…. You will be asked for four things, each for a different reason:

  • To read what is removed and what is kept. The screen shows the real figures for your own tenancy, not a general description.
  • Your password, so a phone somebody else has picked up cannot close your account.
  • A code sent to the phone number the office has on file, which is also the number a recovery will later depend on.
  • The exact phrase DELETE HOUSE followed by your house number, typed out. A checkbox gets clicked without being read.

The account closes the moment that goes through, and you are signed out.

On the web

The same thing, at bilup.co.ke: sign in, open your profile, and use Close my account. You do not need the app installed.

Without the app or the website

If you cannot sign in at all, ask the office to close it for you. Write to info@bilup.co.ke from any address, or message the Bilup bot on Telegram, and say which house you are in. The office will confirm you are the tenant on that house before closing anything. An account that could be closed on an email alone could be closed by anybody.

What is deleted

  • Your sign-in: username and password.
  • The details you filled in yourself: profile photo, email address, second phone number, ID number, occupation, next of kin.

These are removed from your account when it closes, and the account row itself is deleted permanently after 14 days.

What stays, and why

Your rent record is not part of your login. It belongs to the tenancy, the agreement between you and the landlord, and it stays whether you have an account or not, exactly as it did before you ever registered:

  • Every payment you have made, with its M-Pesa reference and date.
  • Your name and the phone number on the tenancy.
  • The date you moved in, your rent, and your balance.
  • Water meter readings and any arrears.
  • Messages between you and the office.
This is the part most people are actually asking about, so it is worth saying directly: closing your account cannot make you owe more, and cannot erase what you have paid. That record is the landlord’s account of money received and it is also your proof that you paid. If it could be deleted on request, so could somebody else’s evidence that they had.

It is kept for as long as the tenancy and the accounting obligations behind it require, and it is removed by the office when a tenancy is closed and wiped, not by closing a login.

Changing your mind

For 14 days the account can be recovered. Start registering again with your M-Pesa reference and choose recover my account; a code goes to the number on the tenancy, the office approves it, and your old password still works. After 14 days you register again from scratch, which changes nothing about your rent record either.
